Wake Wave catches a KLM Cityhopper Embraer 190 on approach at the instant its wake rolls the cloud behind it into a curling wave, the aircraft small and dark at the centre, the whole sky turned teal.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken in March 2024 under a low cloud base, when every aircraft on approach was cutting its own shape into the cloud. This one left the best.

About the aircraft

The Embraer 190 is the Brazilian manufacturer's regional jet for around 100 passengers. It first flew in 2004 and entered service in 2005. KLM Cityhopper, KLM's regional arm, flies it from Amsterdam Schiphol across Europe alongside the smaller E175 and the newer E195-E2.

About the picture

Wake turbulence is always there behind a wing: a pair of counter-rotating vortices spun off the tips, strongest when the aircraft is slow and heavy on approach. Cloud makes it visible for a second or two, long enough to see the air itself move.

Quick facts
