Vulcan Vigil fills the frame with the nose of an Avro Vulcan in anti-flash white, refuelling probe reaching forward, black radome and cockpit glazing picked out against a sky that has turned to storm behind it.

This is an original Marqforde photograph of a preserved Vulcan on static display, taken as a storm built behind it, giving the Cold War bomber the backdrop it deserves.

About the aircraft

The Vulcan was one of the three V-bombers that carried Britain's nuclear deterrent through the Cold War, its delta wing giving it the altitude and speed the role demanded. The white finish was designed to reflect the flash of a nuclear detonation.

Crews held quick reaction alert at readiness around the clock, and the type's final operational chapter was the Black Buck raids of 1982, then the longest bombing missions ever flown. Built by Avro in Cheshire, the Vulcan left RAF service in 1984.
