Vortex Vapour catches a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 head-on in the last seconds before touchdown, the damp air made visible as two twisting ropes of vapour spin off the wingtips and trail away behind it.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken on a misty October morning in 2023, when the humidity was high enough to paint the wake that is always there and almost never seen.

About the aircraft

The 777-300ER, king of the big twins, first flew in 2003 and entered service in 2004. Its enormous GE90 engines and extended range quietly replaced classic jumbos across many long-haul fleets. The vortices in the picture form as high-pressure air under the wing spills around the tip into the low pressure above it, strongest when the aircraft is slow and heavy on approach.
