United Boeing 757 puts a United Airlines 757 on the back of your phone, caught head-on in full landing configuration against a warm sky that fades from teal to gold.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken on final approach to Dublin Airport, at the end of a transatlantic crossing from Washington Dulles.
About the aircraft
The 757 first flew on 19 February 1982 and entered service with Eastern Air Lines on 1 January 1983. Rolls-Royce powered examples gained North Atlantic ETOPS approval in 1986, and Boeing delivered the 1,050th and final 757 to Shanghai Airlines in April 2005.
Transatlantic 757 flying started small: in the early 1990s Continental flew a few Newark routes with 757s carrying 11 fewer seats. It grew in earnest from 2006, helped by winglets saving up to 5 per cent of fuel, and by 2015 made up 21 per cent of 757 miles.
By March 2026 United still had 40 757-200s, averaging 29.2 years old, each with 16 Polaris flat beds. Their successor, the Airbus A321XLR, joined the fleet in June 2026 with 50 on order. At Dublin, United doubled its seasonal Washington service to twice daily from March 2025.
Quick facts
- Aircraft: Boeing 757-200, the version United uses across the Atlantic
- Role: long-range narrowbody for thinner transatlantic routes
- Powerplant: two Rolls-Royce RB211-535 or Pratt and Whitney PW2000 turbofans, 36,600 to 43,500 lb thrust each
- Operator: United Airlines, 40 757-200s and 21 757-300s in 2026
- Notable fact: out of production since the final delivery in April 2005, after 1,050 built at Renton, Washington
