The Tempest is Britain's stake in the sixth generation of combat aviation. Developed under the Global Combat Air Programme with Italy and Japan, and led industrially by BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co under the Edgewing joint venture, it will replace the Eurofighter Typhoon in RAF service from 2035.
On 3 July 2026 the trinational £4.6bn contract signalled that the programme had crossed from ambition into detailed design, with the first flying demonstrator due in 2027. Built around a networked "system of systems" that ties manned aircraft to uncrewed platforms through AI-driven mission architecture, Tempest is designed to redefine what a fighter jet is.
