Spitfire Sweep catches a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire banked steeply towards the crowd, the elliptical wing laid flat to the camera, roundels showing and the propeller turned to a blur against a clear blue sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line in the summer of 2022, where the Spitfire flew as part of the Flight's three-ship display with the Lancaster and a Hurricane. The same frame is on our Supermarine Spitfire phone cases.
About the aircraft
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight formed at RAF Biggin Hill on 11 July 1957 as the Historic Aircraft Flight, with three PR XIX Spitfires and Hurricane LF363. It moved through North Weald, Martlesham Heath, Horsham St Faith and Coltishall before settling at RAF Coningsby in March 1976, and it remains a regular RAF unit funded by the Ministry of Defence, its aircraft flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew.
Between 1959 and 1965 the Flight was down to one Spitfire, PM631, still on strength in 2026. By 2026 it keeps five: Merlin-engined Mk IIa, Vb and XVI fighters and two Griffon-engined PR XIX reconnaissance aircraft. Mk Vb AB910 flew again in January 2026 after more than two years away, wearing the markings she carried with 402 Squadron RCAF on D-Day.
