The Supermarine Spitfire Mk I is the fighter that shaped a nation's memory. Designed by R.J. Mitchell around the Rolls-Royce Merlin and the elliptical wing that became one of aviation's most recognisable silhouettes, it entered RAF service in August 1938 with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford.

Two years later it flew alongside the Hurricane in the summer skies over southern England during the Battle of Britain, defining what British air defence looked like at its most critical moment. Airworthy Mk I examples remain vanishingly rare today, kept flying by dedicated restoration teams for whom every Merlin start is an act of remembrance.

A piece for anyone who has stood at a flypast, heard that sound, and understood exactly why this aircraft still matters.
