Hawk Halo captures the Saudi Hawks climbing in formation, their green and white BAE Hawks pulling long white smoke trails up into a clear blue sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of the Royal Saudi Air Force's display team, taken as the formation pulled up as one, every jet trailing smoke in step.
About the team
The team was formed in June 1998 as No. 88 Squadron at King Abdulaziz Air Base, Dhahran, and gave its first public display in Riyadh in January 1999 for the Kingdom's centenary. It later moved to King Faisal Air Base at Tabuk, in the north-west.
Its jets were drawn from 50 Hawk Mk65 and Mk65A trainers the RSAF ordered under contracts in 1985 and 1994, fitted with smoke generators by BAE and painted green and white. The display grew from six jets to seven in 2014.
The Mk65s were due to bow out in Riyadh in late November 2024. Their successor, the Hawk Mk165, is assembled in Dhahran, with ten of 22 locally built jets earmarked for the team, which unveiled its new display at the World Defense Show in February 2026.
