Red Arrows Apollo Loop captures the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team pulling their Hawk T1 jets through a full loop in Apollo formation, red, white and blue smoke arcing across the sky behind them.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, and one of the photographer's personal favourite shots from the team's display.
About the team
The Red Arrows were formed in late 1964 when the RAF merged its display teams into one, and flew their first season in 1965. They started on the Folland Gnat and switched to the Hawk T1 for the 1980 season.
Since 1968 the team has displayed with nine aircraft, and the Diamond Nine remains its trademark shape. After decades at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the team moved to nearby RAF Waddington in 2022 when Scampton closed.
Each display opens with the whole formation flying loops, rolls and shape changes, which is where the Apollo formation appears. The smoke is diesel mixed with dye, injected into the jet exhaust, and it also helps the pilots judge wind and spacing.
