Rainbow Rotation catches a Ryanair Boeing 737-800 in silhouette, gear down on approach, crossing a sky of pink, gold, green and violet cloud.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken as the jet was coming in to land against a backdrop of ice crystals in the atmosphere behind it. Iridescent cloud is rare and short-lived; the silhouette is there to give the colours something to measure themselves against.
About the aircraft
The Next-Generation 737-800 is the workhorse of low-fares flying in Europe, with 189 seats and CFM56-7B engines, and Ryanair flies the largest 737-800 fleet in the world. The split scimitar winglets visible in the silhouette are a later retrofit that trims fuel burn on every sector.
