Supermarine Spitfire puts a camouflaged RAF Spitfire on the back of your phone, banked steeply against a clear blue sky with the roundels showing on its wings and the propeller turned to a blur.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in 2022, where the Spitfire flew as part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's three-ship display with the Lancaster and a Hurricane.

About the aircraft

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight formed at RAF Biggin Hill on 11 July 1957 as the Historic Aircraft Flight, with three PR XIX Spitfires and Hurricane LF363. Between 1959 and 1965 it was down to one Spitfire, PM631, still on the Flight's strength in 2026.

The Flight moved through North Weald, Martlesham Heath, Horsham St Faith and Coltishall before settling at RAF Coningsby in March 1976. It is a regular RAF unit funded by the Ministry of Defence, its aircraft flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew.

By 2026 the Flight keeps five Spitfires: Merlin-engined Mk IIa, Vb and XVI fighters and two Griffon-engined PR XIX reconnaissance aircraft. Most winter servicing happens at Coningsby, with major servicing contracted out; Mk Vb AB910 flew again in January 2026 after over two years away.
