This is an original Marqforde photograph taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in 2023, when the Spanish Navy Harrier joined an RAF F-35B for formation passes alongside its own solo display.
About the aircraft
The Harrier family began with the Hawker P.1127's first tethered hover on 21 October 1960. A 1972 demonstration aboard the carrier Dédalo off Barcelona won over the Spanish Navy, whose first Harrier unit, the 8ª Escuadrilla, formed with AV-8S Matadors on 29 September 1976.
The 9ª Escuadrilla followed, activated on 29 September 1987, and its first three AV-8Bs flew direct from the United States to Rota that October. Eight Harrier II Plus jets, assembled by CASA in Seville in 1996 and 1997, added the APG-65 radar.
In 2026 the squadron's twelve AV-8B+ and one two-seat TAV-8B fly from Rota and embark in the assault ship Juan Carlos I. Having set aside F-35B plans in 2025, Spain aimed to keep them flying until at least 2032 using Italian and US Marine Corps stocks.
