Radiant Rise catches an easyJet Airbus A320 climbing out as a small silhouette against a sky that has caught fire: thin cloud lit from behind in gold, violet and green, the colours of an iridescent cloud.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken in February 2024 as the jet rotated into low sun. The colours are real: iridescence happens when sunlight diffracts through cloud droplets of nearly the same size.

About the aircraft

The Airbus A320 is the backbone of European short-haul flying. It first flew in 1987 and entered service in 1988 as the first airliner with digital fly-by-wire controls, and the family that grew from it, from the A318 to the A321neo, is one of the best-selling airliners ever built.

easyJet is one of the largest A320-family operators in the world, flying the A319, A320 and A321neo across Europe.
