Lysander Lines catches a Westland Lysander banking under a sky of streaked cloud, the gull wing, spatted undercarriage and tall fin drawn as a single outline in black and white.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line at a flying display, where the Lysander flies as part of an active collection, presented in black and white because the shape is the story.

About the aircraft

The Lysander was built for army co-operation: spotting, liaison and dropping supplies from short, rough strips. Its high wing, automatic slats and flaps let it land and take off in remarkably little room.

That short-field ability found its lasting fame with the RAF's special duties squadrons, which flew matt black Lysanders by moonlight into occupied France to land agents and collect others from fields marked by a handful of torches.
