Trailblazer Typhoon follows an Italian Air Force Eurofighter as it climbs steeply away, two white trails streaming from its wingtips and artwork on its grey fin.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of the jet mid-display, caught as it pulls into a steep climb with the twin trails drawn out behind it against soft cloud and blue sky.
About the aircraft
Italy's first Eurofighter prototype, DA3, flew from Caselle near Turin on 4 June 1995 with Napoleone Bragagnolo at the controls. It was the first to fly with the Eurojet EJ200 chosen for production, and Finmeccanica, now Leonardo, held around 36 per cent of the programme.
Italy designates the single-seater F-2000A and the two-seater TF-2000A. The first delivery, TF-2000A MM55093, reached 4° Stormo at Grosseto on 16 March 2004, and on 16 December 2005 the wing's 9° Gruppo began NATO quick reaction alert, first among the partner nations.
By 2024 the type equipped six gruppi at Grosseto, Gioia del Colle, Trapani and Istrana, with 20° Gruppo training pilots. Italian Typhoons have policed Icelandic and Baltic skies for NATO, and the solo display is flown by test pilots of 311° Gruppo at Pratica di Mare.
