The Messerschmitt Me 410 Hornisse is the heavy fighter the Luftwaffe always wanted from the disappointing Me 210.
With a longer fuselage, refined wing and powerful Daimler-Benz DB 603A engines, the Hornet finally delivered what its predecessor could not — a genuinely capable twin-engine multi-role platform.
It served as fast bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, night intruder, and most notably as a bomber-destroyer armed with cannon heavy enough to bring down a B-17 with a single strike. Just under 1,200 were built before production ended in 1944, and surviving examples are vanishingly rare today, with the only complete original airframe held at the RAF Museum Cosford.
A piece for enthusiasts who follow the deeper end of WWII Luftwaffe aviation and recognise the engineering refinement behind one of Germany's most capable twin-engine designs.
