Gripen Gyre catches a Swedish Air Force Saab Gripen at the top of a pull, the jet small and sharp against a deep blue sky and a thick twin smoke trail curving back the way it came.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line in July 2023 during the Gripen solo display, with the smoke doing most of the talking. The arc is the picture; the aircraft is the full stop.

About the aircraft

The Gripen is Sweden's answer to a hard question: how does a neutral country defend itself without a vast air force? Saab built a light, single-engine canard delta that can operate from short stretches of public road, be turned round in minutes by a small team of conscripts and carry a sensor and weapons fit that punches well above its size.

The prototype first flew on 9 December 1988 and the type entered Swedish Air Force service in the 1990s. The JAS in its designation stands for Jakt, Attack, Spaning: fighter, attack, reconnaissance, in one airframe.
