Globemaster Grey stands a United States Air Force C-17 Globemaster III square on to the camera, four engines slung under the high wing, the rain-soaked apron throwing its reflection back and a line of fast jets parked either side.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken on a wet July morning in 2023 on an airshow static line, walking straight up the boards to the nose. Nobody does big quite like this.

About the aircraft

The C-17 is the US Air Force's strategic and tactical airlifter, able to carry a main battle tank or around 77 tonnes of cargo between continents and still land on a short, rough strip. It first flew in September 1991 and entered service in 1995; production ended in 2015 after 279 aircraft for the USAF and eight allied operators, including the RAF.
