Totally Tricolori captures Italy's Frecce Tricolori climbing in close formation, red, white and green smoke streaming behind them against a deep blue sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of the Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale, taken as the formation pulled up and away with the smoke on, the colours of the Italian flag drawn out in long parallel trails.
About the team
Italian display flying rotated between front-line wings through the 1950s, beginning with the 4th Stormo's Cavallino Rampante on Vampires. A permanent team was ordered at Rivolto on 1 March 1961 and became the 313th Aerobatic Training Group that July.
The team began on F-86E Sabres, took the Fiat G.91PAN in December 1963 and has flown the Aermacchi MB-339A PAN since 1982. In September 2024 a planned switch to the single-engined M-345 gave way to the twin-engined T-346A Master, expected around 2028.
The smoke is a dyed liquid pumped into the exhaust from two underwing tanks, using equipment made by Secondo Mona of Somma Lombardo. Since the 1992 North American tour, the closing Alona, a long tricolour sweep by nine jets, has been flown to Pavarotti's Nessun dorma.
