Hornet Heat captures a Finnish Air Force F/A-18C Hornet from above as it hauls round in a hard turn, both afterburners glowing orange against a pale grey sky.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken during the Finnish Air Force Hornet solo display at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, with the jet on full reheat through one of the routine's tight turns.

About the aircraft

Finland chose the Hornet in May 1992 to replace its Saab Drakens and MiG-21bis. Six two-seat F-18Ds were flown from the United States to Pirkkala in November 1995, while Patria assembled 57 single-seaters at Halli. The production series was complete in 2000.

Flying the Hornet solo is one of the Air Force's honorary roles. The eight to nine minute routine spans 200 to over 1,000 km/h. At RIAT it won the Sir Douglas Bader Trophy in 2018 with Capt Lauri Mäkinen and in 2019 with Capt Arto Ukskoski.

Finland chose 64 F-35A Lightning IIs on 10 December 2021 and signed in February 2022. The first Finnish F-35A was rolled out in December 2025, with jets due at Rovaniemi in autumn 2026 and the Hornet to be phased out by 2030.
