Fifty Fins lines up the Red Arrows on the ground, a row of red Hawk tailfins receding down the flight line, each one wearing the Union Flag scheme and 50 display seasons badge the team flew for its anniversary year, with XX219 nearest the lens.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken on the static line at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in 2014, the team's fiftieth display season. It is the one print in the range with the jets standing still, and the repetition is the point.

About the team

The Red Arrows were formed in late 1964 when the RAF merged its display teams into one, and flew their first season in 1965. They started on the Folland Gnat and switched to the Hawk T1 for the 1980 season, so the 2014 season was their fiftieth.

Since 1968 the team has displayed with nine aircraft, and the Diamond Nine remains its trademark shape. After decades at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the team moved to nearby RAF Waddington in 2022 when Scampton closed.

The anniversary tail scheme gave way to the flowing Union flag tailfin design the team still wears, introduced in 2015. The 60th display season in 2024 brought fresh anniversary artwork and a five-week Canadian tour for the RCAF centenary.
