F-16 Stealth Pass puts the Belgian Air Force Dream Viper on the back of your phone. The photo shows F-16AM FA-87 in its special display scheme, sweeping low beneath a heavy grey sky with the light picking out the lines of the jet.
This is an original Marqforde photograph, taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford on a wet and moody display day during the Dream Viper's 2022 to 2023 run. Neither the pilot, callsign Vrieske, nor this scheme will be seen in the air again.
About the aircraft
Belgium was one of the four original European F-16 partner nations. It ordered 160 F-16A and B aircraft, assembled locally by SABCA, with the first Belgian-built example flying in December 1978. Around 90 airframes later received the Mid-Life Update that created the F-16AM.
The Dream Viper scheme was unveiled at Kleine-Brogel on 9 June 2022 on F-16AM FA-87, designed by display pilot Senior Captain Steven "Vrieske" De Vries himself. In its first season it won the Bill Hartree Trophy at RAF Cosford and the colour scheme award at RIAT 2022.
De Vries, the nineteenth Belgian F-16 demonstration pilot since 1979, flew the Dream Viper in 2022 and 2023. A planned 2024 farewell season was cancelled that February as the Belgian Air Force focused its F-16 hours on training, Ukrainian pilot conversion and the move to 34 F-35A fighters.
