Enid Encircled catches the five Hawks of the Red Arrows' front section holding a tight formation while two more jets draw a ring of smoke around them, the whole shape caught in black and white against a pale sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, taken from the crowd line and finished in monochrome so the smoke, the shapes and the spacing do the talking. It is the quietest print in the range, and it holds a wall on its own.
About the team
The display is flown in two named sections. Reds 1 to 5 form the front section, Enid, named after Enid Blyton, author of the Famous Five. Reds 6 to 9 are Hanna, after Ray Hanna, one of the team's founding pilots and early leaders.
Hawker Siddeley's prototype Hawk, XX154, first flew from Dunsfold on 21 August 1974, reaching 20,000 ft in a 53-minute flight. The RAF took the type from late 1976, and the team's jets add smoke modifications and a slightly uprated engine for faster throttle response.
The smoke is diesel mixed with dye, injected into the jet exhaust, and it also helps the pilots judge wind and spacing. To spare ageing engines, most 2026 displays use seven jets, and the Hawk T1 is due to serve until the end of 2029.
