Dassault Diamond captures a French Air and Space Force Rafale banked steeply in a nose-high turn, its dark grey airframe cut by light, angular stripes and a flash of red, white and blue, set against a pale, cloudy sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of a Rafale in special display colours, caught mid-bank with its canards and delta wing laid out almost in plan view.
About the aircraft
The Rafale A demonstrator first flew from Istres on 4 July 1986 on two General Electric F404s, the Hornet's engine. In early 1990 one F404 made way for a Snecma M88. Dassault designed the production Rafale to replace seven air force and navy types.
Close-coupled canards work with the delta wing to maximise manoeuvrability. Each Safran M88 gives about 16,500 lb of thrust in reheat and can be removed and refitted in around an hour. Safran's M88 T-REX, unveiled in June 2025, targets 9 tonnes for the Rafale F5.
The single-seat Rafale C first flew on 19 May 1991, the naval M that December and the two-seat B in April 1993. The M's stronger undercarriage and tailhook add about 500 kg. All carry SPECTRA, a Thales and MBDA threat warning, jamming and decoy suite.
Quick facts
- Aircraft: Dassault Rafale, a twin-engine canard-delta multirole fighter
- Variants: Rafale C single-seat, Rafale B two-seat, Rafale M carrier-borne
- Powerplant: two Safran (formerly Snecma) M88 turbofans, about 16,500 lb thrust each with afterburner
- Operator: French Air and Space Force
- Notable fact: the Rafale A demonstrator made 865 test flights over eight years and reached Mach 2
- Photo context: nose-high bank in special display colours against a cloudy sky
