Blackjack Mist puts the RAF Typhoon Display Team's famous black jet on the back of your phone, its Union Flag and roundel colours cutting through the haze as it powers along the display line.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of Typhoon FGR4 ZJ914, known to enthusiasts as Blackjack, captured during its display at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford. It is one of our personal favourites.
About the team
The RAF Typhoon Display Team is drawn from 29 Squadron at RAF Coningsby, the unit that trains Typhoon pilots. Each year one pilot is selected to fly the display, supported by engineers and specialists from every aircraft trade on the squadron.
ZJ914 was unveiled in its black scheme on 29 May 2021, with design cues from the Union Flag and the RAF roundel. Spotters nicknamed it Blackjack and the team adopted the name. It served three seasons, flown by Flt Lts James Sainty, Adam O'Hare and Matthew Brighty.
The Typhoon FGR4 is powered by two Eurojet EJ200 engines of around 20,000 lb thrust each, giving Mach 1.6 and a 55,000 ft ceiling. Away from the airshow circuit it holds Quick Reaction Alert for the UK and the Falkland Islands.
