The Avro Lancaster is the aircraft that defined British heavy bomber operations of the Second World War. Powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlins and built to carry a bomb load no rival could match, it flew the Dambusters raid with 617 Squadron in May 1943, sank the Tirpitz, and delivered the war's heaviest conventional weapons in the Tallboy and 22,000-lb Grand Slam.

Just under 7,400 were built by A.V. Roe and its subcontractors. Only two remain airworthy today: PA474 with the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and FM213 with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. When either passes overhead at a flypast, the sound of four Merlins alone stops crowds.
