Spitfire Silhouette looks straight down the fuselage of RW388 from behind, tailwheel to spinner, the elliptical wings spread wide and a wall of glass flaring white behind the propeller.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken indoors and presented in black and white, so the shape Mitchell drew in 1936 does all the work.

About the aircraft

R.J. Mitchell designed the Spitfire around the Rolls-Royce Merlin and the elliptical wing that became one of aviation's most recognisable silhouettes. The prototype K5054 first flew on 5 March 1936 and the type entered RAF service in August 1938 with No. 19 Squadron at Duxford. Production ran to 20,351 across all variants.

RW388 is a late-war Mk XVI, built in 1945 with an American-built Packard Merlin, and it has been on public display in Mitchell's home county of Staffordshire since 1972, now restored and shown indoors in its own gallery.
