Red Arrows Ultra captures the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team mid-display, with Hawk jets and their coloured smoke filling the frame during one of the tighter second-half passes flown by a small section of the team.
This is an original Marqforde photograph of the Red Arrows, taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford, where the team is a regular highlight of the summer flying programme.
About the team
The Red Arrows flew their first public displays in 1965, initially in the Folland Gnat. The team grew to nine aircraft in 1968 and adopted the Diamond Nine, still its trademark formation. The BAE Hawk T1 replaced the Gnat for the 1980 season.
Long based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the team moved to nearby RAF Waddington in October 2022. Every display pilot has flown frontline aircraft such as the Typhoon operationally before joining, and by early 2024 the team had flown almost 5,000 displays in 57 countries.
The red, white and blue smoke comes from diesel injected into the jet exhaust, with dye added for the colours. In the second half of the show the formation splits into smaller sections, including the Synchro Pair, for the faster crossing and rolling passes.
