Rafale Roll catches a French Navy Rafale M rolling into a turn, canards and delta wing laid out towards the crowd, the dark grey jet carved out of an even darker sky.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in July 2023. The naval Rafale is the carrier version, built for the deck of the Charles de Gaulle, and it shows: the heavier undercarriage and tailhook are there if you know where to look.
About the aircraft
The Rafale A demonstrator first flew from Istres on 4 July 1986 on two General Electric F404s, the Hornet's engine. In early 1990 one F404 made way for a Snecma M88. Dassault designed the production Rafale to replace seven air force and navy types.
Close-coupled canards work with the delta wing to maximise manoeuvrability. Each Safran M88 gives about 16,500 lb of thrust in reheat and can be removed and refitted in around an hour.
The single-seat Rafale C first flew on 19 May 1991, the naval M that December and the two-seat B in April 1993. The M's stronger undercarriage and tailhook add about 500 kg. All carry SPECTRA, a Thales and MBDA threat warning, jamming and decoy suite.
Quick facts
