Lancaster Lineage catches the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Avro Lancaster in a clean side-on pass, four Merlins turning, camouflage and roundels sharp against an unbroken blue sky.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line in the summer of 2022, as the Lancaster led the Flight's three-ship display with a Spitfire and a Hurricane.

About the aircraft

The Avro Lancaster defined British heavy bomber operations of the Second World War. Built to carry a bomb load no rival could match, it flew the Dambusters raid with 617 Squadron in May 1943, sank the Tirpitz, and delivered the war's heaviest conventional weapons in the Tallboy and the 22,000 lb Grand Slam. Almost 7,400 were built by A.V. Roe and its subcontractors.

Only two remain airworthy: PA474 with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and FM213 with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight formed at RAF Biggin Hill on 11 July 1957 as the Historic Aircraft Flight, with three PR XIX Spitfires and Hurricane LF363. It moved through North Weald, Martlesham Heath, Horsham St Faith and Coltishall before settling at RAF Coningsby in March 1976, and it remains a regular RAF unit funded by the Ministry of Defence, its aircraft flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew.
