Giant Gaze meets an Emirates Airbus A380 head-on as it taxies towards the runway, the double-deck nose filling the bottom of the frame and the tail climbing above it into a heavy grey sky.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the fence line in October 2023, with the superjumbo lined up straight at the camera. A portrait print, because nothing else does the tail justice.

About the aircraft

The A380 first flew from Toulouse on 27 April 2005 and entered service with Singapore Airlines in October 2007. Emirates had been the first airline to announce an order, in July 2000, and flew its first A380 service, to New York JFK, on 1 August 2008.

Airbus announced the end of production on 14 February 2019. The final airframe was delivered to Emirates in December 2021 as its 123rd A380, nearly half of all deliveries. By January 2026 Emirates had 116 in the fleet, and Rolls-Royce Trent 900 support now runs into the 2040s.
