Comet Chase catches the scarlet de Havilland DH88 Comet G-ACSS, Grosvenor House, rolled onto its wingtip against a deep blue sky, both propellers turning and the registration reading down the wing.
This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line at a flying display, where the Comet flies as part of an active collection. Few aircraft of the 1930s look this modern ninety years on.
About the aircraft
De Havilland built the DH88 for one purpose: the 1934 MacRobertson air race from England to Australia. A sleek twin-engined wooden monoplane with retractable undercarriage and variable-pitch propellers, it was years ahead of the airliners of its day.
G-ACSS, named Grosvenor House after the London hotel that sponsored it, won the race outright in under 71 hours. Its layout fed directly into the de Havilland Mosquito a few years later.
