Austrian Air Force QRA puts an Austrian Eurofighter Typhoon on the back of your phone, photographed as one of a pair flying a quick reaction alert demonstration, the same intercept routine the fleet performs for real over Austria.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in 2022. That year marked the Austrian Air Force's debut at RIAT, with two Typhoons scrambling from Fairford to intercept a Hercules playing the part of an unidentified intruder.

About the aircraft

Austria signed for 18 Typhoons in 2003 and cut the order to 15 in 2007, accepting partially used Tranche 1 airframes instead of new Tranche 2 jets. The first aircraft arrived in July 2007 and the last was delivered in September 2009, replacing the retired Saab 35 Draken.

The fleet flies from Hinterstoisser Air Base at Zeltweg with the Überwachungsgeschwader, the Air Surveillance Wing, which keeps a QRA cell ready to scramble for air policing. By late 2013 the 15 aircraft had logged more than 5,000 flying hours in that role.

Each Typhoon is powered by two Eurojet EJ200 turbofans giving more than 90 kN each in reheat. Austria's jets are Tranche 1 single-seaters flown without IRIS-T or full beyond visual range missiles, and the type is due to retire no later than 2037.
