red-arrows-apollo-loop-wall-art-print
Red Arrows Apollo Loop - Wall Art Print

Red Arrows Apollo Loop catches the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team coming over the top of a full loop in Apollo formation, nine Hawks nose-down together as red, white and blue smoke arcs across the sky behind them.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford, and one of the photographer's personal favourite shots from the team's display. It has been a favourite with customers too, first as a framed print and then as a phone case; this is the same frame, printed large again.

About the team

The Red Arrows were formed in late 1964 when the RAF merged its display teams into one, and flew their first season in 1965. They started on the Folland Gnat and switched to the Hawk T1 for the 1980 season.

Since 1968 the team has displayed with nine aircraft, and the Diamond Nine remains its trademark shape. After decades at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the team moved to nearby RAF Waddington in 2022 when Scampton closed.

Each display opens with the whole formation flying loops, rolls and shape changes, which is where the Apollo formation appears. The smoke is diesel mixed with dye, injected into the jet exhaust, and it also helps the pilots judge wind and spacing.

Quick facts

Aircraft: BAE Systems Hawk T1 advanced jet trainer

Role: Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, displaying since 1965

Powerplant: one Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour Mk 151 turbofan

Home base: RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, formerly RAF Scampton

Notable fact: almost 5,000 displays in 57 countries by early 2024

Display context: Apollo formation loop during the first half of the show at RIAT, RAF Fairford

The print

Printed to order in the UK on museum quality fine art cotton photo rag.
