In early 1990 one F404 made way for a Snecma M88. Dassault designed the production Rafale to replace seven air force and navy types.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eClose-coupled canards work with the delta wing to maximise manoeuvrability. Each Safran M88 gives about 16,500 lb of thrust in reheat and can be removed and refitted in around an hour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe single-seat Rafale C first flew on 19 May 1991, the naval M that December and the two-seat B in April 1993. The M's stronger undercarriage and tailhook add about 500 kg.
