Built to carry a bomb load no rival could match, it flew the Dambusters raid with 617 Squadron in May 1943, sank the Tirpitz, and delivered the war's heaviest conventional weapons in the Tallboy and the 22,000 lb Grand Slam. Almost 7,400 were built by A.V. Roe and its subcontractors.

Only two remain airworthy: PA474 with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and FM213 with the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight formed at RAF Biggin Hill on 11 July 1957 as the Historic Aircraft Flight, with three PR XIX Spitfires and Hurricane LF363.
