Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX and armed across its sub-variants with everything from twelve Browning machine guns to four 20 mm cannon and 40 mm anti-tank guns, it fought over North Africa, Malta, the Arctic convoys and Burma. History remembers the Battle of Britain; the Hurricane's second chapter shaped the war beyond it.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight formed at RAF Biggin Hill on 11 July 1957 as the Historic Aircraft Flight, with three PR XIX Spitfires and Hurricane LF363. It moved through North Weald, Martlesham Heath, Horsham St Faith and Coltishall before settling at RAF Coningsby in March 1976, and it remains a regular RAF unit funded by the Ministry of Defence, its aircraft flown by regular and reserve RAF aircrew.

Quick facts

Aircraft: Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc, serial LF363

Designer: Sir Sydney Camm; manufacturer Hawker Aircraft Ltd

Powerplant: Rolls-Royce Merlin XX, 1,280 hp

Production: 14,533 Hurricanes of all variants

Operator: Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire; a founding aircraft of the Flight in 1957

Display context: three-ship with the Lancaster and a Spitfire, summer 2022

The print

Printed to order in the UK on museum quality fine art cotton photo rag.
