The Navy chose it on 2 May 1975, McDonnell Douglas and Northrop reworked it into the F-18, and the Hornet first flew on 18 November 1978.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLong leading-edge extensions beside the cockpit shed strong vortices that raise the wing's stall angle. Bursting vortices battered the twin fins, so small fences were added to the extensions to ease the buffeting.
