The arc is the picture; the aircraft is the full stop.

About the aircraft

The Gripen is Sweden's answer to a hard question: how does a neutral country defend itself without a vast air force? Saab built a light, single-engine canard delta that can operate from short stretches of public road, be turned round in minutes by a small team of conscripts and carry a sensor and weapons fit that punches well above its size.

The prototype first flew on 9 December 1988 and the type entered Swedish Air Force service in the 1990s. The JAS in its designation stands for Jakt, Attack, Spaning: fighter, attack, reconnaissance, in one airframe.

Quick facts

Aircraft: Saab JAS 39C Gripen, single-engine canard-delta multirole fighter

First flight: 9 December 1988

Powerplant: one Volvo RM12 afterburning turbofan, developed from the General Electric F404

Designed for: dispersed operations from road bases with fast turnarounds

Operator: Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet)

Display context: pull-up trailing smoke during the solo display, July 2023

The print

Printed to order in the UK on museum quality fine art cotton photo rag.
