alpine-alert-wall-art-print
Alpine Alert - Wall Art Print

Alpine Alert catches an Austrian Air Force Eurofighter climbing out hard, both afterburners lit, the grey jet small and sharp against an unbroken blue sky.

This is an original Marqforde photograph taken from the crowd line at the Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, in July 2022, as the Austrian jet demonstrated the kind of climb it flies for real on quick reaction alert over the Alps.

About the aircraft

The Typhoon's canard-delta layout is deliberately unstable, trading natural steadiness for agility. No pilot could fly it unaided, so four independent flight control computers, with no mechanical backup, correct it continuously, while carefree handling blocks any demand that would exceed structural or aerodynamic limits.

Its roots lie in two British research aircraft. Jaguar XX765 flew on 20 October 1981 as the first aircraft with an all-digital quadruplex fly-by-wire system and no mechanical backup. The unstable EAP demonstrator followed on 8 August 1986, and both are now at the RAF Museum, Cosford.

Austria flies the Typhoon as its only fighter, policing a neutral country's airspace from Zeltweg in Styria. Quick reaction alert is the job: jets held ready to launch within minutes to intercept an aircraft that has lost radio contact, strayed off its flight plan or refused to identify itself.

Quick facts

Aircraft: Eurofighter Typhoon, twin-engine canard-delta fighter

Flight controls: full-authority quadruplex digital fly-by-wire, no mechanical backup

Powerplant: two Eurojet EJ200 afterburning turbofans

Operator: Austrian Air Force, Zeltweg Air Base, Styria

Role: quick reaction alert and air policing over neutral Austria

Display context: afterburner climb-out, Royal International Air Tattoo, RAF Fairford, 2022

The print

Printed to order in the UK from our original photograph.
