Designed around a four-gun powered turret and no forward-firing armament, it was built on the theory that a two-seat interceptor with concentrated rear defence could break up unescorted bomber formations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver Dunkirk in May 1940 the concept briefly worked, with 264 Squadron catching Luftwaffe fighters off guard on the assumption they were Hurricanes. Once German pilots adapted their tactics, the daylight role became untenable, but the Defiant found genuine purpose after dark.
